More than Just a Movie Star

We all know and love Cameron Diaz for her wide-smile, blonde hair and blue eyes, and her talented execution of every role she plays. But beyond the acting career of this superstar, there are other things in life that get her going. Diaz has been vocal about her political opinions during presidential elections and has contributed to Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America, which is the largest group dedicated to the troops and civilian supporters of these two wars. However, the cause to which Diaz has dedicated the most time and for which she is most known, is the environment. In 2009, Time named Diaz one of the Heroes of the Environment. Working with Jesse Dylan, she created a 5 minute YouTube film called Cameron Diaz Saves The World! In this video she travels around asking people questions about the environment and attempting to find answers to many tough environmental questions. Diaz also hosted the 2005 MTV documentary series, Trippin’. This show also starred Drew Barrymore, Jessica Alba, and Justin Timberlake, who travel around the world visiting impoverished areas of the world and noting their simple, frugal living, suggesting we alter our wasteful lifestyles. Another of her environmental quests was a role in the formation of the Save Our Selves organization. This group was responsible for organizing the Live Earth Concerts in 2007. Live Earth events take place around the globe and are ways for people to come together to try and combat the growing problem of global warming. It has also been reported that Diaz buys carbon assets for all of the trips she takes to help cover her carbon footprint. Many celebrities are criticized for being extremely vocal about changing lifestyle habits to be more environmentally efficient, because their wealth allows them to utilize expensive technology such as solar panels. However, in addition to the public appeals Diaz makes for everyone to be more eco-conscious, she certainly sets an example herself.
